06/14/2024 I wish I did not have the insight for this article because its so painful to experience the effects of not yielding to your conscience, when God is trying to bring you back to Himself. For some reason, its not taught on a whole lot, the idea of “conscience” to the Christian believer after they’ve been born again, but we’re taught it in the New Testament teachings contiually. This is because for Christians, we should realize that its even our conscience that takes a part in us accepting God as good and the devil as bad, and white as white and black as black, even prior to being regenerated. “There is no middle ground” is what my daughter said yesterday, when we were doing bible study. We were discussing how important it is to believe all of the Bible and not just the conveneint concepts, or the easy interpretations. If it is hard to talk about how the Lord deals with the soul using the ideas of correction and conviction, how much more is it a challenge to write about it! Holding true to your conscience is a VITAL part of staying alive in your faith. If you know you have been regenerated and are reading this, I would think that by now either the fear of the Lord has kicked into your thoughts, or you’ve dismissed reading it as just a waste of time. Either way – yielding to the conscience is a thing I believe, every Christian that practices faith, must hold to every day!

Everyday Examples

I can think of some very weak examples of a person needing to have the Holy Spirit (assuming the person is already come to have Christ as their Lord) so that they can yield to their conscience in a given day.

Let’s let “Christiana” be our character for now, a Christian woman who is trying to live by faith.

Situation 1: A person slams on the breaks of their car right in front of her almost causing a total wreck, and (let’s call her Christiana”) though not completely wrecked, immediately chooses to either get out of the car and cuss the person out (not a good idea and not godly), or choose a more righteous path.

Situation 2: Christiana has a daughter that spilled apple juice on the floor, and she had just mopped. Either the Mom can graciously help her daughter by not becoming angry and saying something she’d repent of later, or by God’s strength keep her cool, and bear in with God.

Situation 3: In regards to conscience, Christiana knows the truth about a matter, and instead of admitting it readily, she knows it would hurt people present, she harbors it inside and holds it, and though justice is due to Christiana, she reasons (in her spirit, her mind and her conscience) that it would be better to share with an individual what needs to be said when the time is more appropriate. “A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold, in a setting of silver” (Proverbs 11:25). I feel like wives do this one a lot.

So, I’ve painted a very easy picture of someone using their conscience to choose to do good or bad. But what about when you approach an issue and you are not responding to it in your conscience, or glossing over what happened and mulling over to the next thing without acknowledging in your mind, what you know God has said (by His Word) about the issue, or by conviction (the Holy Spirit deposit in you that testifies to Jesus), or by your fearing what in the world would God have you do in this matter?!

When I have had times before of exhaustion or fatigue in my emotions affecting my spirit, or emotions in my spirit affecting my energy, or however I could express that I was flat out “tired”, I have had some times where I froze inward and did not heed my conscience, turn my inner eye to the truth of God’s word. This was surely at a time I even knew I needed to do so, and usually, it was in a severe situation or could have resulted in one. God will allow us to be tested (see the book of Job and see Exodus miracle story of Moses throwing the stick in the water, and it becoming drinkable for the complaining Israelites).

I know there are many scriptures that speak to the idea of conscience and how IMPORTANT it is that it be kept soft and pliable, and subject to God’s words, and not every wind of doctrine, womanly weaknesses, pride and selfishness.

The Holy Spirit enables us to walk in a clean conscience before God, because of the Holy Spirit and Him dealing with us personally through His Word, and His Saints, and His mercy! By continually reading the Bible, our conscience and whole person can be shaped to becoming complete in holiness! It is not impossible in this tarnished world, to still desire, at least desire a clean conscience! We all need help in this!

When I read these verses it fires me up, and makes me realize I need to be a better Christian, God help me!
