John’s Post for “Houses in the Bible”

John has been doing great work on Economics and is studying about finances. God has shown him a lot, and he is going to be doing so for a while, I think. He posts so regularly that I can’t keep up with him! Here is a recent video he did on the houses seen by the characters in the Bible! Enjoy

Learning About The Powerful, Good Holy Spirit

Oct 27, 2022

I have been working on a book about Bible doctrines for a while now. It is called Bible Doctrines by P.C. Nelson. I grew up in a Pentecostal environment and then radically gave myself to God and got born again in college. I’m not sure if it calmed me down from my upbringing or revved me up :). But now I am known by God. I’m learning about a lot of these ideas in this wonderful book. Many of the doctrines and staples of the New Testament are outlined, defined, and thought through, with Scriptures abounding all along the text. The ideas in the book are about the person of Jesus Christ, the authority of the Word of God, the place of identity in the believer, Baptism, Communion, and other ordinances of the church. Right now, I’m at the section about the Holy Spirit’s power, and being filled with the Holy Spirit. Though there will be much more to muse on and explain once the book is finished, Here are some stellar quotes that although in eloquent language, do clearly bring forth some good ideas if you can grasp the meaning of the words. I have learned so much (and glad my husband told me to read this book) and here are the quotes:

I plan on copying it word for word off the page in the book. There is a quote by an A. Maclaren which through light research, I believe is Alexander Maclaren, who did expository writing and discovery of great truths in the word of God. Here is the quote of the reading directly off the book’s page, which is really his (A. Maclaren’s) quotes. I felt in the last few days this passage selection was relevant and appropriate for me, so I hope someone can get something out of it.

(Page (70) Halfway Down the Page)

“A. Maclaren: “The fire of God’s Spirit is not a wrathful energy, working pain and death, but a merciful omnipotence, bringing light, and joy, and peace. The Spirit which is fire is a Spirit which giveth life…Christ comes to kindle in men’s souls a blaze of enthusiastic Divine love, such as the world never saw, and to set them aflame with fervent earnestness, which shall melt all the icy hardness of heart, and turn cold self-regard into self-forgetting consecration” (Sermon Bible).

In his Exposition of Holy Scriptures, the same writer says: “Here is the power that produces that inner fervor without which virtue is a name and religion a yoke. Here is the contrast, not only to John’s baptism, but to all worldly religion, to all formalism, and decent deadness of external propriety. Here is the consecration of enthusiasm – not a lurid, sullen heat of ignorant fanaticism, but a living glow of an enkindled nature, which flames because kindled by the inextinguishable blaze of His love who gave himself for us, ‘He shall baptize you in fire.’ “

The Importance of Sharing Testimony

Recently, I’ve been musing more on how when believers get together, it is vital for them to be able to have a moment where they can recollect what God is doing in their lives, in order to share it with others. Prayer following is great too! Sometimes, I have been to and seen meetings, where there is the sharing of time together, as in listening to a speaker. I wish there were more sharing, and not only listening to a speaker, though everything has its place. I have to say, though, that my most favorite time in the Lord, upon reflecting back to it, are those when I’ve been able to say what God has done in my life, whether with friends talking, or in a bible meeting session, or being in a service that is more casual, or with my family, or with even a stranger, if I can testify to something good that God has done for me. I am saddened when I think about how many times I see people I love, and miss opportunities to share or better yet, to let them share what the Lord is teaching them. And I think it true, sometimes too, that possibly a soul can be a listening ear, to gather what another person is going through, without them needing to say the words, but rather listening to the overflow of their speech, listening to their heart.

Some verses come to mind when I think about such sharing of testimony, that is telling others about what good (or bad), positive or negative things they are talking to God about, and where they are seeing His light on their situation. Here are some of the verses and parts of verses:

“Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Hebrews 13:15-16 NASV

“What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.” 1 Corinthians 14:26 NASV

“…for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.” Luke 6:45 (end of verse) NASB

“For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Matthew 12:34 (end of verse) BSB

When Jesus returns for His Church, and He is coming soon, just as He said, He will be wanting a bride cleansed by His blood. That means, from what I understand, that the church that is all the believers in Jesus, will need to be ready by confessing and repenting their sins as much as they can. However, I think it also means that our power and overcoming sin will come from us sharing our testimony with people that genuinely love the Lord, and want to go on with Jesus.

“Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night. “And they overcame him (accuser) because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death. “For this reason, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time.” Revelation 12:10-12

How Demons Can Cause Negative Thinking – Derek Prince

There is so much mystery to the spirit realm, the realm of Holy Spirit, angels and demons. But I have a lot of respect for this teacher. He shares so much good from experience and the word of God. This video is definitely worth the time! I’m just learning to enjoy his youtube channel. He also has put many videos in Spanish, and I think some other languages. I have not studied this historical figure other than watching movies of him. I know that he was a Christian who pioneered educational ideas and philosophy. He was also a soldier for Jesus, and great courage was required of him to stand firm in the faith. Here is a link to Vimeo, which is the only website I can find where the movie we watched could be found. It has a free trailer, but the video on him must be rented to be watched through Vimeo. The video is very enlightening in regard to homeschooling also.

Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace – Free Movie on Youtube

Excellent movie – Forgive me if I haven’t watched this video through, to test it, but I have seen this movie before and it is phenomenal for encouragement in the faith! Please give it a view – its about the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who also wrote “The Cost of Discipleship”. I have heard very good things about that book, but haven’t read it yet, and it’s a good film to watch, that I do know. Bonhoeffer had to do similar to Corrie Ten Boom, in lying for the sake of some Jews, or on their behalf, to save them in the Holocaust from being eliminated for their race’s sake. It was a test in his faith and cost him his life, but saved some!

FYI – Why Months Don’t Match Their Prefixes

I have wondered before why the months on our calendar were September, October, November, December, when “Oct” as a prefix usually means 8. “Sept” usually means 7, “Nov” serve like the prefix for nine, “Dec” – serves as the prefix for 10. However, we know our calendar says September is the ninth month instead of the 7th. October is the 10th month, instead of the 8 (think like OCTagon); November is the 11th month for us, and not the 9th. And December (think DECimeter) is the 12th for our modern accepted calendar, not the 10th month like “Dec” would suppose.

I found an article type response-webpage, that gives some insight as to why this is so. It really is like a forum of people responding, but I had trouble looking up this topic in the sense of what keywords to use in the search, so for now, this is the web info I have from the UK. Enjoy!

Query is “Why is September the ninth month when it means 7, and likewise for October, November, December…?
